Outlook Email Recovery

If the index of Outlook.pst file gets damaged, then Outlook cannot open the PST file. If you try to open such a damaged file, Outlook displays following error message:

“Outlook.pst cannot be accessed - 0×80040116.”

The above error message simply means that you need to repair the Outlook.pst file in order to recover emails, contacts, notes, etc. from it. If you run the Inbox Repair tool (Scanpst.exe), the problem won’t be resolved and the Scanpst.exe tool may not report any errors. The Inbox Repair tool is a freeware from Microsoft, which gets installed when you install MS Outlook. It can help you repair the damaged PST file if the corruption is minor; but if in case the file is highly corrupted, Inbox Repair tool cannot repair the file.

Inbox repair tool only repairs the header files of PST, so if the index of PST file is damaged then it is not the right tool to work with. To resolve this issue, run the "2 GB Truncation" tool followed by the Inbox Repair tool, and then open the repaired file. This will fix the error and you can open MS Outlook. Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the procedure may vary from version to version. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Download the "2 GB Truncation" tool (Pst2gb.exe) from Microsoft download center and extract the 2gb152.exe file to an empty folder. Now run this tool and scanpst.exe and then open the folder that contains the new .pst file that got created and repaired. If this file opens successfully, it is listed in the file list under Recovered Personal Folders. If not, then the PST file is severely damaged and there are many more errors than just the index corruption. It becomes beyond the reach of these utilities to repair such damaged PST file. You need to opt for any good third party PST repair software.
